Last month HCC’s phone rang and on the other end was a stressed-out grandmother of three who had just found out her mother passed away. The family was preparing to take a 16-hour drive to attend funeral services. Through the woman’s tears we could also tell that she was extremely worried because she didn’t have anything appropriate to wear to her mom’s funeral. Our HCC volunteers told her to come into HCC that same day. They shopped with her and helped her find two outfits to wear, one for the service and another for her mom’s burial. A sigh of relief was heard and a slight smile was even seen on her face! HCC volunteers also prayed with her and sent the family on their way with extra snacks, toys and books for the long road trip ahead. This special encounter reminded us all to never underestimate the comfort that the proper clothing can provide.
