It was so exciting to see our very own Grand Canyon University Lopes qualify for their very first NCAA March Madness Tournament! Not only was their men’s basketball team flying high, so were some other GCU students who visited HCC West Phoenix to volunteer last month. HCC hosts service teams at all HCC locations. Pre-school kids through college students get out of the classrooms for a morning of service. Last month two GCU classes came out to serve and, after the morning concluded, the very last student to leave pulled aside our team member and said, “I really appreciate what you all are doing here. Families wouldn’t be able to make it without your help. I used to be homeless as a kid, living in shelters, and we could have really used an HCC back then.” Then the GCU student gave our team member a twenty dollar bill. She said, “I know it isn’t much, but I really want to help!”
Wow, what a great example of true sacrificial giving! On the way out she shared that she is graduating this semester and also getting married next month! Her success story reminds us to focus on HCC’s mission, because the next kid we serve can look just like her in 15 years!
